You're here to work. Fishing is what the lodge sells to guests. If they put you on a boat after hours, late August into September is silvers and rainbows. Kings are closed — if you hook one, it comes off the hook in the water.
Coho (silvers)
Now through mid-September, often on the tides
Aggressive. Bright marabou (purple, pink), spinners, small jigs. This is the salmon still in season.
Rainbow trout
All month, best close to camp and in the rapids. Bigger push as silvers spawn.
Beads (6–8mm, bigger if the water's dirty), leeches, flesh. Follow a guide — they know today's water.
Dolly Varden / arctic char
With the rainbows, especially Margot Creek once sockeye are spawning
Same beads and small streamers. Fun extras, not the main event.
Sockeye
Still around in August, tapering in September. Spawning or holding in slower seams.
Ask if they're worth a stop. Brooks Falls is the famous sockeye/bear scene — guest trip unless work sends you.
Kings
Season closed end of July
You may still foul or bump one. Immediate release. Single hook in spawning water.
- Work first. Don't skip a shift to fish.
- Rubber-soled boots only — felt is illegal in Alaska.
- Brooks Falls is flies only. Rangers run the platform. Give bears the space.
- The lodge has heavy rods. Ask a guide what they're throwing today instead of inventing a plan.
- Wading the Naknek is cold and pushy. Belt on the waders. Listen when they say don't cross.
Brooks Falls
Famous bear-and-salmon falls in Katmai. Guests go as a lodge trip. If you're sent or invited, rangers run the platform. Give bears the space they already own.
King Salmon town
Small. Groceries and a few services if you need something. Tell someone at camp where you're going and when you'll be back.
Naknek River
This is the lodge's workplace. Jet boats, cold water, paying guests. Off the clock, listen to a guide about wading — it's pushy.
Weather, late August
Think 48–62°F, wind, and rain on any given hour. Layers beat a single heavy coat. Nights are getting darker, which helps sleep.
